Welcome to the Shope-family Website

  Last Modified : September 24th, 2002

The idea of this site is to share stories and pictures among the family members.  If you click on any of the links you will need a password.  This is just because this site is for family and friends, and we don't necessarily want to share everything with everyone.  If you want a password just send us a mail here.  You'll get your free e-mail address that you can forward to your existing mailbox or you can use the Webmail here.   This is handy for the rest of us since it is really hard to keep the e-mail list up to date.  Since you can change the forwarding yourself, you will be the only one to blame if you get left out! You will also have free web space if you want it to publish your pages !  In the family-only section you can upload your files, find e-mails, birthdays, and geneology information.

For the moment the information below concerns the Richard E. Shope branch of the family but this is not the final intention.  The site will soon be organized by orginal ancestors (for shope's that are not related directly to Bernhardt) and then by successive descendants both female and male.  Any links to the name are welcome and will be published.  Just send a mail.  Much of the current content is thanks to William K. Shope who has done a great job of documenting his research.

Here are some family links.  If you know others please send us a mail.

Bernhardt Schop is the original ancestor in America (on the male side).  The original article http://maley.net/transcription/Sketches/shope-addendum.htm.

The following article links Jacob Shope to George Shope, but is wrong about the orginal ancestor since Jacob is Bernhardt's son and Jacob was born in Pennsylvania, not Germany.     George Shope from Iowa was Charles Cornelius' father who was Richard Shope's father.
The original article http://maley.net/transcription/Sketches2/shope_a_l.htm

Richard Edwin Shope December 25th, 1901 who maried Hellen Ellis and had four children.   The original article is here

Hellen Ellis 1902 - 2001 (eight in the picture)
Children :  Richard Edwin Shope Jr.
                Robert Shope
                Nancy Shope Fitzgerrell
                Thomas Shope

The family picture is here (Mom = Mary, Dad = Charles, kids top to bottom Richard, Ellen, Ray)

The following info is hot off Tall Pines (A lakeside cabin where Helen Ellis Shope spent her summers and where her daughter often spends her summers now)

The great grandparents are:

Richard's Father
Dr. Charles Cornelius Shope, October 15, 1866, Iowa Center, Polk County, Iowa. This seems to fit in with the article about Jacob Shope and George Shope.  So Charles' father would seem to be George Shope born in Oberlin PA. in 1838 who then moved to Iowa and maried Charles' mother Ellen Sesson and had four children : Edwin, Charles, William and Albert.   George's father would be Abram Shope, born July 24, 1817.  Abram's father would be Jacob Shope.  Jacob's father was Bernhardt Schop who came to America on the Neptune in 1753.

Richard's Mother
Mary Hast Shope, February 19, 1871, Des Moines, Iowa.
Children:  Richard E. Shope, Dec 25 1901-1968
Ellen Annette Shope, Sept 4, 1903-?
Raymond Hast Shope, Jan 21, 1907-?

The following are from the Old Family Bible of Mary Hast Shope

Mary Hast's Mother
Sophie Worth Hast born in Germany 1848, died Nov, 1880
Children ; Mary Hast, Feb 19, 1871
               August Hast, Sept 1, 1874
Lulu Hast, Sept 15, 1878 at Winterset, Iowa
Anna Baker Hast (Louis Hast's second wife)
Children:  Carl B. Hast, Aug 18, 1883
Louis Grover Hast, Jan 15, 1887
Georgia Annette Hast, Nov 1, 1889
Fred Homer Hast, Feb 26, 1892

Mary Hast's Father

There seems to be a book on the subject of the shope family, but I have not been able to find any place to buy.  Bratwurst, Bagpipes, and Tea: A History of the Shope, Stinson, Tillinghast and Related Families, by Roxanna Shope. GenColl R 929.2 SHOPE.  We have found the author, but she has not yet answered our messages on the phone...
